Program Description

The purpose of the Consultants &Entrepreneurs Special Interest Group (SIG) is to provide an environment within ATD Kansas City where independent consultants, contractors, and business owners can thrive! This unique community of talent developers, instructional designers, learning consultants, and business owners will meet to:

Learn from each other through facilitated “mastermind” groups
Develop referral networks to support business development
Provide peer support and mentoring for each other

On the second Thursday of each month, the C&E SIG will hold meet-ups - some will be virtual and others in-person - for facilitated networking, knowledge sharing, and socializing. Bring your tough questions and challenges from your business for the group to solve with their wealth of knowledge and experience.

Using a development activity guide, choose the options that will help you unlock skill improvement and knowledge, aligning them to your goals
Plan the right combination of 52 – 12 – 1 to your calendar to open the door to learning and application
Create your pitch for investment in your own development

SPEAKER BIO

Heidi Matthews is a Training Manager at Terracon, a consulting engineering firm, with a diverse career in facilitation, instructional design, sales, strategic planning, and management for global and national companies. She is recognized for her leadership, idea development, and ability to connect people and concepts to support others' success.

Heidi has actively contributed to industry leadership through her roles on the Construction Industry Resource Training Network board and multiple board positions for ATDKC. She has been a facilitator for Training Magazine Network’s Training Manager certificate program for the past 3 years and continues to mentor several participants. Her ability to connect the dots and pull through concepts while also helping others to risk assess, has made her a valued partner to her organization and colleagues.

Program Description

Join fellow talent development professionals for a 90-minute Leadership Special Interest Group (SIG) focused on the real challenges and priorities shaping leadership development today. This interactive session is designed for practitioners who design, deliver, or support leadership programs—and those looking to sharpen their approach with practical, market-tested insights.

Our features leadership spotlight speaker for Thu. Sept 17, 6 pm – 7:30 pm is Kim Brody, Leadership & Talent Development Program Manager, Dairy Farmers of America (DFA).

Agenda

6:00 - 6:30: Participant round table. After brief intro to ATDKC, scope of the Leadership Special Interest Group, and introduction of our guest leadership development leader, everyone will be engaged in conversation and polling on their top priority for leadership development and challenges.

6:30 - 7:00: Guest leadership speaker, Kim Brody, will spotlight a priority leadership topic she is focused on, learnings and challenges. The goal is to gain insight into multiple industries and takeaway tips. The leadership topic is not prescribed, so our featured leadership speaker can choose what they want to highlight. This should include a presentation and time for Q&A.

7:00 - 7:30 pm: Crowdsourcing, networking, and connection. This is optional if guests want to stay on to chat further, share, and collect insight from others.

Participants will gain insights into the program's design, key success factors, challenges, and lessons learned, while exploring practical strategies that can be applied within their own organizations. Whether you're launching a new leadership program or strengthening an existing one, you'll leave with ideas and tips for creating engaging learning experiences that build leadership capability, strengthen relationships, and support organizational performance.

Featured Speaker

Kim Brody is a Leadership and Talent Development Program Manager with Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), where she designs and facilitates leadership development experiences that help leaders grow, connect, and create meaningful impact. With more than 25 years of experience in learning and development, Kim partners with leaders, HR professionals, and talent practitioners to strengthen leadership capability at every level. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in English and certifications in ATD Project Management, The Six Types of Working Genius, Everything DiSC, Situational Leadership II, and a Coaching for Performance bronze award from Performance Consultants International. Kim is an experienced facilitator who values cultivating relationships and creating meaningful learning experiences that drive engagement, growth, and performance.

Most recently, DFA's Leadership and Talent Development team was recognized with the ATD Kansas City Chapter's Excellence in Practice Award for Leadership Development for its frontline leadership development program.

At the heart of Kim's work is a simple mission: to create experiences that transform relationships. She believes that everyone is a leader and that our everyday behaviors shape the culture of our teams, organizations, families, and communities. Grounded by her values of faith, family, and community, Kim is passionate about helping people build trust, strengthen connections, and create positive, lasting impact wherever they serve.

Amy Swaminathan, CPTD® loves helping others reach their full potential. She’s a champion for driving your own career through ongoing development, learning from others, and using the benefits an ATD membership provides. She is a Sr. Talent Development Consultant at Saint Luke’s/BJC Health, supporting leadership development and new employee orientation.
